Handrails

When designing public spaces, uniformly conceived street furniture is of outstanding importance. One part of this is the wide variety of railings, which fulfil a barrier and demarcation function as well as their task as a decorative element. Handrails function primarily as a means of ensuring the safety of passers-by and visitors.

In addition, however, handrails are also a stylistic element that significantly shapes the appearance of an outdoor area. Through the individual choice of construction and colour, a handrail allows for an open space design that corresponds to the respective environment. As part of the street furniture, these railings must be stable, durable and low-maintenance. In addition to these safety aspects, handrails must also fit seamlessly into historical as well as modern environments, thus enabling appealing urban planning.

Handrails are used, among other things, on staircases, terrace steps, ramps or balconies, where they offer optimal protection and safety from falling. A handrail makes any ascent or descent easier by providing a comfortable, safe and ergonomic grip and is therefore an extremely helpful support, especially on steep ascents or descents.

Handrails can either be realised as wall handrails or they are part of an entire railing. Depending on the width of the steps, handrails must be installed along one side of a staircase, on both sides or additionally in the middle. If the handrail is part of a railing, it should be noted that the distance between the handrail and other components such as posts must be at least 5 cm.

Materials for handrails are stainless steel and steel, which, hot-dip galvanised and colour-coated, can be matched in colour according to the RAL or DB card. Handrails are available in various designs, which differ, among other things, in the railing posts used and any crossbars attached between the posts.

Whether the environment is more historical, classical or modern, the wide variety of models of handrails on offer allows for an individually adapted, appealing open space design. With Thieme handrails, even complicated courses can be realised. The high quality of materials, workmanship and construction ensure the required robustness and durability of the handrails.
