Aurich

Variety and liveliness

Redesign of Aurich pedestrian zone

The pedestrian zone was redesigned in several stages as part of the renovation of the historic old town in Aurich. Its appearance was clearly outdated, and the street furniture and fixtures no longer met modern requirements. With a comprehensive redesign, landscape architects Horeis + Blatt from Bremen, in collaboration with PVB Planungsgesellschaft VerkehrsBau mbH and the PGT Umwelt und Verkehr office, provided impetus for the revitalisation of the public space, thereby ensuring the future viability of the pedestrian zone.

Newly created lounge areas

A continuous carpet of concrete paving stones with natural stone facing in a row pattern was chosen as the central and connecting design element in Burgstraße and Osterstraße, which hints at the historic street profile with a separation between the pavement and the road, but was constructed at the same level. This ‘separation’ is created solely by a subtle nuance in the appearance of the paving surface through a change in format. The newly created recreational areas, also known locally as ‘Snackdeelen’, now extend linearly across the entire project area and have been equipped with various elements.

Variety and vibrancy with Bari planters from Thieme

One element of this new range of street furniture is the Bari plant pot from Thieme. With its minimalist, clear design, the plant pot blends harmoniously into the overall concept of the new pedestrian zone. The different colour variations of the coated steel provide variety and liveliness and set subtle and harmoniously coordinated colour accents in the context of the other street furniture elements. The high density of underground cables also prevented new planting. The choice of the freely positionable Bari plant pot created a green pedestrian zone and at the same time allowed a high degree of flexibility for spatial arrangements during events.

The flexibility of the planters is also reflected in their feet, which can be adjusted to different slopes thanks to their height adjustability. The special inner containers also serve as insulation. The layer of air between the outer and inner containers ensures that the root areas of the plants do not heat up as much.

Storage space for bicycles of all sizes

As part of the City of Aurich's cycling master plan, Thieme's Ancona bicycle racks have been added to several areas of the pedestrian zone. With its simple elegance and curved design, the rack provides parking for bicycles of all sizes. The material and colour scheme are impressive, featuring hot-dip galvanised steel with a colour coating in DB 703.
