Redesign of Rahden church square

In 2016, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) awarded the Kirchplatz in Rahden the title of Monument of the Month in order to draw attention to necessary renovation work in the city centre. Funding from the inner city development concept (ISEK) made it possible to redesign the Kirchplatz in order to increase the general attractiveness of the inner city in addition to the "Kirchring"-development.

Simple and clear forms

The Potsdam office of Marcel Adam Landschaftsarchitekten BDLA won the ideas and realisation competition. Their design was characterised by the lively design of the centre of Rahden and makes the urban significance as a social centre and multifunctional place for events tangible again. An inner city furniture concept planned for this purpose envisaged the use of fewer, simple and clear forms.

Sustainable overall concept

The soberly designed benches with backrests and armrests invite you to linger and complement the landscape architects' overall sustainable concept by using durable woods from exemplary managed forests. A robust frame made of hot-dip galvanised steel profile ensures a long service life. Colour-coated in DB 703 (micaceous iron ore grey), a uniform overall style is created for all the steel parts used.

Pleasant looking green spaces

The sacred significance of the site is also increasingly emphasised. The cross-shaped path is bordered by 180 linear metres of steel railings. In addition to providing protection for the flowerbeds, this also enhances the pleasant effect of the Grünflächen.

High-quality design showcase

A high-quality design showcase in DIN A0 format, also from the Thieme range, provides information about any events and news in the church. With its integrated lighting, it attracts attention even at late hours.

Green vein

In addition to numerous steel posts with flat heads, which are used to protect pedestrians from moving traffic, both fixed and removable, round planters with a diameter of 80 cm form a green vein running from the Kirchplatz to the Alter Markt. The beautifully shaped planter with watering system defies the weather thanks to its hot-dip galvanised body and its height-adjustable feet offer compensation in sloping situations. The enlarged and modernised play areas for children at the Alter Markt are complemented by a water feature.

The special "Rahden" bicycle lean-to made of hot-dip galvanised steel with an additional crossbar is used throughout the district and makes it easy to park your bike.
